Kolide

Build Status Go Report Card GoDoc

Kolide is an agentless osquery (https://osquery.io/) web interface and remote api server. Kolide uses the osquery remote apis to do ad-hoc distributed queries, osqueryd configurations and the collection and processing of scheduled queries (packs). Kolide was designed to be extremely portable (a single binary) and performant while keeping the codebase simple. I have a lot planned for Kolide so check back soon or follow me on @mephux.

What is osquery?

osquery allows you to easily ask questions about your Linux and OSX infrastructure. Whether your goal is intrusion detection, infrastructure reliability, or compliance, osquery gives you the ability to empower and inform a broad set of organizations within your company." - via https://osquery.io/

Kolide Rest API & OSquery Remote API

Kolide has a rest api that uses jwt (https://jwt.io/) for authentication. The only exception to this is the osquery remote api below.

osquery remote api:

method url osquery configuration cli flag
POST /api/v1/osquery/enroll --enroll_tls_endpoint
POST /api/v1/osquery/config --config_tls_endpoint
POST /api/v1/osquery/log --logger_tls_endpoint
POST /api/v1/osquery/read --distributed_tls_read_endpoint
POST /api/v1/osquery/write --distributed_tls_write_endpoint

TODO

What else should I add? Add a ticket and let me know!

  • Database auth (salt/hash)
  • LDAP support
  • Full OSquery Remote API Support
  • Read/Write UI
  • Basic saved queries and loading
  • Websockets (live node updates)
  • CI
  • Websockets (osquery logs)
  • OSquery Config & Pack
  • Node Editing
  • Scheduled query UI
  • Rules engine for alerting (slack, pagerduty etc..)
  • Auto build and publish deb/rpms using packagecloud.io
  • Write tests for reasonable things

Building / Development

  1. To build Kolide from the source code yourself you need to have a working Go environment with version 1.5 or greater installed.

  2. Get the code into your $GOPATH

GO15VENDOREXPERIMENT=1 go get github.com/mephux/kolide

or

git clone https://github.com/mephux/kolide.git

  1. Install build/dev dependencies.

make deps

  1. Start postgres and redis
The easiest way to start writing code is to use docker/docker-compose.

* `make up` will run docker-compose and bootstrap the deps
* `make down` will spin down and remove all deps

Certs/Openssl

make certs-remote cn=kolide.io

This will drop a kolide.crt and kolide.key into ./tmp and copy them to /tmp

For local development, replace kolide.io with localhost.

Running Kolide

usage: kolide --config=CONFIG [<flags>]

osquery command and control

Flags:
--help Show context-sensitive help (also try --help-long and --help-man).
    --debug Enable debug mode.
-q, --quiet Remove all output logging
--dev enable dev mode (serve assets from disk)
-c, --config=CONFIG configuration file

Contributing

When contributing to this repository, please first discuss the change you wish to make via issue, email, or any other method with the owners of this repository before making a change.

Pull Request Process

  1. Ensure any install or build dependencies are removed before the end of the layer when doing a build.
  2. Update the README.md with details of changes to the interface, this includes new environment variables, exposed ports, useful file locations and container parameters.
  3. Increase the version numbers in any examples files and the README.md to the new version that this Pull Request would represent. The versioning scheme we use is SemVer.
  4. You may merge the Pull Request in once you have the sign-off of two other developers, or if you do not have permission to do that, you may request the second reviewer to merge it for you.
