dibo

dibo (dockerignore boilerplates) is a simple CLI tool written in Go for generating .dockerignore files from reusable templates.

It is inspired by gibo, but focused specifically on Docker. With dibo, you can quickly create a .dockerignore tailored to your project by combining multiple templates.

Installation

Using Go

Using Nix (Flakes)

You can run dibo directly or install it using Nix Flakes.

Run without installing

Install to your profile

Use in a temporary shell

usage

Template names are case-insensitive — go, Go, and GO all resolve to the same template.

Development tasks

This repository uses just as its task runner. Enter the Nix development shell, then run just to list available tasks.

nix develop
just check    # format, lint, test, and build

Release

Release Please runs after every merge to main. Conventional Commit prefixes determine the next version: feat: creates a minor release, fix: a patch release, and chore: does not release. It creates a release PR; merging that PR creates the version tag and triggers GoReleaser to publish the GitHub Release and Homebrew Formula.

The repository Actions secret HOMEBREW_TAP_GITHUB_TOKEN must have write access to both this repository and anton-fuji/homebrew-tap.

Generate .dockerignore

Generate .dockerignore for your project. Multiple templates are merged and duplicate patterns are removed automatically.

By default init will not overwrite an existing .dockerignore. Use a flag to change that:

-f, --force	Overwrite the file if it already exists
-a, --append	Append to the file instead of overwriting
-o, --output <path>	Write to a different path (default: .dockerignore)

Interactive selection

Choose one or more templates without remembering their names. Enter the displayed numbers or template names, separated by commas.

dibo init --interactive

List Templates

Show a list of available templates.

dibo list

Search Templates

Filter templates by keyword (case-insensitive substring match).

dibo search ru     # -> Ruby, Rust

Detect a project

Detect supported project files in a directory and print the recommended template set. Add --write to generate the file in that directory.

dibo detect

dibo detect ./api
# Create it with: dibo init Common Go Secrets --output api/.dockerignore

dibo detect ./api --write

detect recognizes Go, Node.js, Python, Ruby, Rust, Java/Kotlin, PHP, and .NET projects. It recommends Common and Secrets in addition to each detected language template.

Check a .dockerignore

Check that the current .dockerignore excludes common build artifacts for detected project types and a small baseline of secret file patterns. The command exits non-zero when it finds omissions, which makes it suitable for CI.

Dump a template

Output the contents of a specified template to stdout.

dibo dump <template> [<template>...]

Shell completion

dibo ships with completion for bash, zsh, fish, and powershell. Template names are completed automatically.

If you want to generate .dockerignore for Go:

dibo init Go

Recommend : Use with fzf

For an interactive experience, combine dibo with fzf.
