README

Tesseract

Tesseract is a local-first context, memory, knowledge, event, and workspace service for people, tools, and AI agents. Its revisioned domains keep append-only history; workspace holds one mutable current value with optimistic concurrency and identity tombstones. Tesseract applies namespace and capability policy and exposes the store through a Go library, CLI, HTTP API, embedded web UI, and MCP server.

Public preview, pre-1.0. Tesseract is in active daily internal use across Hollis Labs — it's the memory this very session type recalls from and writes back to. Tagged public previews are available; built in the open: contracts are documented and tested, but breaking changes can still land in any minor. Read CHANGELOG.md before upgrading.

What it is today

  • revisioned context records with deterministic heads and history
  • separate memory and pointer-backed knowledge domains
  • mutable project workspace items with stable IDs and version tokens
  • namespace ownership and scoped capability tokens
  • authorized service credential rotation with bounded overlap and metadata-only retries
  • explicit request, approval, and apply stages for cross-namespace promotion
  • lexical recall plus optional OpenAI-backed embeddings and synthesis
  • a local operator UI embedded in the Go binary
  • integrity-checked, failure-atomic store backup and restore

Where it sits in the stack

agents / apps Nanite, Torque, Tangent, or any MCP/HTTP client
        │
   ┌───────────┐
   │ Tesseract │ context + memory + knowledge + event + workspace
   └───────────┘
        │
storage local, append-only log — no external database

Tesseract doesn't run agents and doesn't decide anything — it's not an agent runtime, task tracker, or orchestrator (that's Nanite's, Torque's, and Tangent's job). It only stores, revises, and retrieves; anything that speaks MCP, HTTP, or the Go library reads and writes the same way.

Examples

Daily use. This session, like every session across the portfolio, recalls prior context and decisions from Tesseract at the start of a task (tesseract_recall) and writes durable decisions, follow-ups, and handoffs back to it once the work is reviewed (the capture-decision / capture-handoff skills).

Composition. An agent picks up a task from Torque, recalls relevant history from Tesseract before starting, does the work in Nanite, and writes the outcome back to Tesseract — three MCP servers, none aware of the others' internals, composed only through the agent's own tool calls.

Shared or isolated memory. Any app in the portfolio can point at the same Tesseract instance to share one memory surface, or run against a private instance when isolation matters more than sharing — the namespace and capability-token model is what makes either safe.

Roadmap

  • Public-preview hardening, sequenced deliberately: repository behavior, safety, and data/contract integrity first; install experience and the public-facing surface once the code is near final; CI, branch protection, and release gates last, as an audit pass rather than a 1.0 feature push.
  • Portfolio MCP standardization: moving onto a shared MCP server/client library built on modelcontextprotocol/go-sdk, retiring the hand-rolled hollis-labs/go-mcp layer — a change that lands across every app in the portfolio, including this one.
  • Deferred, post-preview: richer recall, graph/entity memory, procedural/playbook memory, provenance and descendant retraction, and write-time enrichment — scoped from real public-preview usage, not committed to yet.

Go library dependencies

From v0.11.0, Tesseract uses the published libs modules (core/util, llm/core, mcp/plugin-mcp, ui/ui-go). Embedded consumers supplying an embedder to WithEmbedder must import github.com/hollis-labs/libs/llm/core/embedcontracts; consumers supplying a queue to WithQueue must import github.com/hollis-labs/libs/core/util/queue. The old standalone paths define different Go types. Update these dependencies together when upgrading an embedded consumer.

Install from source

The current preview is distributed as source. There are no supported prebuilt binaries, package-manager formulae, container images, or desktop installers.

Requirements:

  • Go 1.26.8 or newer
  • Git
  • Node.js 20.19–20.x or 22.12+ with npm only when changing and rebuilding frontend/
git clone https://github.com/hollis-labs/tesseract.git
cd tesseract
make build
./tesseract --version

make build compiles the committed web UI bundle and needs only Go. Use make install to install the binary into your Go bin directory. Frontend contributors use make build-all or regenerate the embedded bundle explicitly.

Quick start

Inspect the paths Tesseract will use before creating data:

./tesseract path

Start the daemon:

./tesseract serve

The default listener is http://127.0.0.1:8089: loopback-only, guarded by go-auth in permissive mode (nothing rejected, callers without a bearer are reported; flip to enforce in config.yaml, see docs/auth.md). The API is under /v1/, and the web UI is at /.

In another terminal, write and read a context record:

./tesseract context put \
  --client-id demo \
  --namespace app/demo/session \
  --key goal \
  --actor app:demo \
  --json '{"objective":"evaluate tesseract"}'

./tesseract context get \
  --namespace app/demo/session \
  --key goal

Provider credentials are optional. Core context, memory, knowledge, lexical recall, CLI, HTTP, UI, and MCP workflows work without them. To enable embeddings or synthesis, copy one of the sample configs to the config-file reported by tesseract path and store the keys with secrets set (see docs/secrets.md; environment variables are not read):

The type vocabularies Tesseract validates writes against are yours to revise, in the optional types-file reported by tesseract path. See examples/types.yaml and Type vocabularies.

Provider-backed features transmit selected content to the configured provider. Review the data egress table before enabling them.

The complete first-run flow is in docs/QUICKSTART.md.

Network and authentication boundary

Tesseract refuses a non-loopback bind without a token mode, and the go-auth guard defaults to enforce there (docs/auth.md). For remote access, choose managed authentication or a static token:

# Create a managed token before starting managed-auth mode.
./tesseract context token create \
  --name remote-client \
  --client-id app:remote-client \
  --scopes write,promote.request,packet \
  --namespaces 'app/remote-client/*' \
  --ttl 24h \
--secret-file ./remote-client.token # new 0600 file; the token is never printed

./tesseract serve --managed-auth --addr 0.0.0.0:8089
export TESSERACT_TOKEN='replace-with-a-long-random-token'
./tesseract serve --static-token "$TESSERACT_TOKEN" --addr 0.0.0.0:8089

When either token mode is active, every HTTP route requires Authorization: Bearer <token> except readiness and the optional metrics endpoint. A static token deliberately has no admin scope. Mutating the runtime settings or its config backups therefore requires managed auth and a managed token created with the explicit admin scope (that token requires --secret-file and explicit, literal-rooted --namespaces globs).

Authentication is not transport encryption. Tesseract has no built-in TLS; put any remotely reachable listener behind TLS, a VPN, an SSH tunnel, or a trusted TLS-terminating reverse proxy. See SECURITY.md.

MCP

Tesseract can run as an MCP stdio server; a separate HTTP daemon is not required:

./tesseract mcp --token-file /path/to/protected/token

The token is read once at startup: --token-file takes precedence over a nonblank TESSERACT_MCP_TOKEN, which takes precedence over the legacy --token flag. An unreadable or empty token file fails startup. Keep token files outside source control with mode 0600. Environment input removes the token from argv, but same-user processes can still read the process environment on Linux.

Use examples/mcp.json as a client configuration starting point. The token controls mutations, memory/knowledge read scopes, and some namespace filtering, but it is not a complete read-isolation boundary for the local stdio server. See docs/AGENT-SETUP.md and docs/MCP_TOOLS.md. The observation-only tesseract_runtime_get tool reports executable staleness; see its evidence and platform limits.

Backup before real use

A current backup is a directory containing a whole-database snapshot, record payloads, and a checksummed manifest. Configuration is included only when --config is supplied.

./tesseract context backup export \
  --out "$PWD/tesseract-backup" \
  --config /path/reported/by/tesseract-path/config.yaml

./tesseract context backup verify --in "$PWD/tesseract-backup"

Stop every daemon and MCP process that uses the store before restoring. Restore replaces the destination; it does not merge. Detailed recovery and upgrade guidance is in docs/OPERATIONS.md.
