sqs-to-sns

sqs-to-sns is an utility written in Go to forward messages from AWS SQS Queues to AWS SNS Topics.

Features

  • sqs-to-sns reliably and efficiently moves messages from SQS queues to SNS topics. When deployed with default provided helm chart, it is tuned to scale up quickly in order to catch up with huge burts of incoming messages.
  • It is a cloud-native tool designed to run on Kubernetes with automatic elastic escalability. But can also be deployed as a standalone daemon.
  • Deployment is easy and flexible since it is provided as a static binary and as docker image.
  • It is resilient against loss of messages by taking advantage of SQS features, providing at-least-once delivery guarantee. It does not use or depend on any other persistent storage.
  • The configuration file is declarative and can specify multiple queue-to-topic mappings in YAML format.
  • Messages can be moved both across different aws regions and across distinct aws accounts.
  • Standard aws credentials are supported, including static iam users, EC2 instance profiles and iam roles.
  • Messages attributes can be copied from queue to topic.
  • Metrics are exposed in a Prometheus endpoint, providing simple and easy monitoring and alerting, with rich metrics including volume, errors and latency.
  • Open Telemetry traces can be directed to a Jaeger collector, keeping track of messaging flows that cross SQS/SNS boundaries in distributed applications.

  • The deployment provided in the helm chart is designed to scale automatically with a CPU-based HPA.
  • Benchmarking in an m5a.2xlarge EKS worker node instance delivered about 1 req/s per mili-CPU. That means a single POD running with the default helm chart configuration (sized at 300 mili-CPU resource request) would forward up to 300 messages/s before scaling up. Then every additional auto-scaled POD would add extra 300 messages/s forwarding capacity.
  • Default HPA configuration provided in the helm chart would scale up many replicas very quickly based on CPU load, if there are many SQS messages to forward. If you have huge queues to forward but cannot afford scaling up many POD replicas, make sure to fine tune the HPA max replicas limit.

Roles

You can use the "queue role ARN" to specify a role to access the source queue, and "topic role ARN" to specify a role to access the destination topic.

The role in "queue role ARN" must allow actions sqs:ReceiveMessage and sqs:DeleteMessage to source queue.

The role in "topic role ARN" must allow action sns:Publish to destination topic.

Utility to populate SQS queue

Use batch-sqs to send messages to an SQS queue.

CAUTION: With default parameters you would inject your SQS with 10000 messages at a rate of ~1000 messages/sec.
